So, you think you’re ready for college? Whether you’re a student fresh out of high school, or an adult looking to continue their education, understanding why you want to go college is very important. There are many people who attend college simply to conform to expectations, from parents, teachers, or others. This is not a good thing, and if you’re feeling like you’re being pressured to go, its time to take a step back and think through things very carefully.

However, that isn’t what I want to focus on with this article. Instead, I want you to ask yourself why you want to go to college, so that you can better understand where you should be going, and what you should be looking for when selecting the right school for you. To illustrate this, here are some possible answers to the question, “Why do you want to go to college?”, and a description of the type of college the answerer should be looking into.

  • “I want learn the skills I need to do what I love” - any school offering solid training in said skills
  • “I like the prestige that having a college degree gives” - A “big name” school can’t be beat for prestige
  • “To maximize my earning potential” - Go to a school specializing in high end professions
  • “I want to have a great time, and meet lots of new people” - A good “party school” should fit the bill
  • “To learn a new skill set for my job” - Find a school with a solid continuing education program

These are all very different, perfectly valid reasons to go to college. As you can see, whatever answer you give will affect what type of school you’re looking for. So, ask yourself the question, “Why do I want to go to college?” Really think about what you’re hoping to get out of the experience.

Once you have this answer, you have made a big step forward in finding the right school for you. Think about what type of school will meet your needs, and use that to narrow down your search. This will be a great help for cutting down the pool.
